Getting to GILA

How will I get to GILA?

Galena is in the Alaska Interior and not connected to the road system. Travel in and out of the community is through commerical airlines. Galena is fortunate to have one of the finest airports in the Alaska Bush, a legacy from the years when the community served as an Air Force base. The 7,000-foot runway, which was designed for fighter jets, cargo planes, and commercial jets, allows for instrument landings in almost any weather.

Which airlines serve Galena?

The airlines serving Galena are Frontier Flying Service and Warbelow’s Air Ventures. Both airlines provide scheduled and chartered flights in and out of Galena.

What’s the role of the school?

Students flights to and from GILA are arranged by the school at the start of the school year, during the Christmas break, and at the end of the school year.

What about flights at other times of the year?

The family of the student can arrange flights in and out of Galena at their own cost.

When are the regularly scheduled flights in and out of Galena?

Frontier Flying Service provides daily flights to and from Fairbanks. Those flights are scheduled to connect easily with Anchorage flights. There is a direct flight to and from Anchorage on Sunday.

Warbelow’s Air Ventures provides daily flights to and from Fairbanks from the Galena airport.
